Holy Trinity

PUT YOUR TAX REBATE TO WORK --  Holy Trinity's Conspicuous Compassion Campaign will send tax rebate dollars to the Bawa Health Initiative in Cameroon, Africa, co-founded by Quinnipiac University professor Dennis Richardson, above left.  The campaign will also benefit Fabian's Place, an overflow emergency shelter in Middletown, CT.

PENNIES FROM HEAVEN

Every time you roam the Web using the GoodSearch search engine (based on Yahoo), a penny will go to Holy Trinity.  It may not seem like much, but those pennies can add up to big bucks.  Just go to www.GoodSearch.com and click on “Add GoodSearch to your toolbar." There you will find simple instructions to download the toolbar. Just be sure to select Church of the Holy Trinity as your choice of charity, and always use GoodSearch when searching the internet. If just 100 members use GoodSearch only twice a day, the church can earn over $700 a year!

NAME BADGES

Wearing name badges in church is one of the key recommendations included in our strategic plan to make Holy Trinity a more welcoming place.  You can make your own at the table in the back of the church and insert it in a clear plastic holder, with your choice of lanyard or clip-on fastener. Stick-on name badges are also available for one-time use. Your badge may be kept in bins at the back on the church or in the hallway leading to the Victorian room.

WHEN YOU ARE HOSPITALIZED
If you are hospitalized, you or your family members should  notify the church  as soon as possible.  Upon admission to the hospital, you will be asked if you desire to have your religious affiliation as a part of your medical record, and for permission to make your name available to clergy.  Please state both your denomination and parish.

Our rector, Maggie Minnick, has had her hip replacement surgery and is recuperating at Water’s Edge for approximately a week to 10 days. After that she will recover at home. During this time the Rev. Steve Ling will cover the services and pastoral care for both Trinity Church Portland and Holy Trinity in Middletown. During the month of July, Trinity Portland will join us here for worship, and then for the month of August Holy Trinity parishioners will go across the river to worship at Trinity Portland. Steve will be in the office at Holy Trinity on Mondays and Wednesdays. He will be in Portland on Tuesdays and Thursdays. He will be checking messages at Holy Trinity Monday and Wednesday mornings and on Fridays.

Conspicuous Compassion

Wondering what to do with your economic stimulus check?  Have you considered giving all or part of it to those who are truly in need?  Our rector, Maggie Minnick, suggested this in a sermon last May.  Our bishop and the national church made similar suggestions.  Holy Trinity has established a special fund to which parishioners can contribute all or any portion of their refund checks.  Contributions will go to Fabian's Place, an emergency overflow shelter that operates in Middletown during the winter months, and the the Bawa Health Initiative, which is building a medical clinic in Cameroon.  More...

Is Your Pledge Up to Date?

With the soaring price of food and fuel, many people are having more trouble paying their bills these days. It’s no different with the church. Recently, we signed an oil contract for the coming season that saw the price per gallon go from $2.34 per gallon to $3.79 per gallon, bringing our estimated fuel bill to almost $60,000, compared with about $35,000 last year. Unlike previous years, our new contract calls for 12 payments per year rather than 10, with payments starting over the summer months, when many parishioners are away. This year, more than ever, it’s important to keep your pledge up to date. Through May, we were already $20,000 behind budget in contributions from parishioners, while expenses were running higher than budget. To help us get back on track, please keep your pledge current, even if you are away. Thanks!

Summer Concert Thanks

On behalf of Joyful Noise Ministry (JNM), I want to offer my most sincere thanks to all of the members of our congregation who have supported our efforts. The concert on June 28th can only be considered a wonderful success. And I do not mean that solely, or even primarily, in the financial sense.

Your Praise Band, surrounded by almost 300 people, performing (not as part of a worship service with our “family”) for the first time, gave it all up to God, and He really delivered! According to all reports, we made a joyful noise to the Lord. And we can’t wait to do it again.

Through the generosity of our congregation and local businesses, as well as ticket, food, and other sales that night, we made about $4,000 from the concert – one-third of our estimated cost for the Third Floor Youth Program (and not all of the promised money is in yet!). This program, that I really want to kick-off in September, is the vision that undergirds all of our other efforts.

The new slogan of the National Episcopal Church is “Put Your Faith to Work.” This is a charge and a challenge that we must all try to fulfill. JNM, with those clear words on our T-shirts, is striving to continue the tradition of our community of faith, which has been putting its faith to work, in this place, for over 134 years. Especial thanks to Sharon Sheedy, Linda and Bill Menosky, Pam Ferguson, Dave Lamb, Laura Kirby, and Maggie Minnick. On behalf of the members of JNM, our children and our children’s children, I thank you all.  Blessings,Sue Scibilia, JNM Coordinator.

Parish Votes to Sell Broad Street Property

At a special parish meeting June 22, the congregation gave the go-ahead to sell the house owned by the church at 148 Broad Street. The property has housed the House of Many Talents for 40 years and was also the site for the English Tea Garden, which closed last year.  Acquired in 1952, the house previously served as a curates' residence.  The structure now requires major repairs, including replacement of the roof and two boilers.  The House of Talents will be relocated to the church once a sale is approved by the diocese.  Several non-profit groups have both expressed interest in acquiring the property.   According to parishioner and attorney Suzanne Scibilia, who is handling the transaction, the proposed sale is expected to net more than $200,000.  Proceeds would be used for capital improvements to the remaining church buildings.

PENTECOST

May 13 marks the beginning of Pentecost on the Christian liturgical calendar.  In Jewish tradition, Pentecost was originally an agricultural festival and later commemorated the giving of the Law to Moses at Mt. Sinai.  According to the account in Acts, Jesus' disciples gathered in Jerusalem on Pentecost (50 days after Passover), and they were filled with the Holy Spirit, marking the birth of the Christian Church.
